Subway was started when Fred De Luca borrowed $1,000 from a family friend and started a sandwich shop in 1965.  This was started in Bridgeport, Connecticut and was called Subway right from the beginning.  Originally Fred was only looking for a way to help pay his way through medical school and Dr. Peter Buck loaned him the money to begin Subway.  They had the goal of having 32 stores within 10 years and Fred quickly learned how to properly run a business.  By 1974 they had 16 locations in Connecticut and they began to franchise.  There are over 5,000 Subway restaurants in the United States today and the brand is the largest submarine sandwich chain across the world with over 34,000 locations.

Subway serves sandwiches on freshly baked bread that is made every single day.  They serve a variety of different sandwiches that can be topped however the customer prefers.  Many of the Subway locations serve local favorites along with $5 footlong subs on a monthly basis.  They now serve breakfast sandwiches as well and they are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  They also have freshly baked cookies, a variety of beverages, and chips as a side item to go along with a drink for a combo platter.  They also offer platters for parties and catering for specific types of events.

Subway is one of the biggest restaurant franchises across the world and they are still offering new franchise locations in many areas.  The initial franchise fee is $15,000 and the royalties are 12.5% paid every week.  Eight percent of the royalties go for actual royalties and 4.5% goes towards advertising.  The initial investment to open a Subway location is between $114,000 and $259,000.  They provide training for all new restaurant franchisees and they have 12 training centers across the world.
