Schlotzsky’s started in 1971 in Austin, Texas.  This was the home to a single, one-of-a-kind sandwich and the menu was very simply.  It was started by Don and Dolores Dissman and in 1981 the company had expanded to 100 franchise stores.  The company was purchase by John and Jeff Wooley and Gary Bradley for a little less than $3 million and in 1982 Bradley took the real estate business they owned and the Wooleys kept Schlotzsky’s.  They took the company public in 1995 and it stayed public until 2004 when Bobby Cox Companies bought into the company.  In 2006 they were acquired by FOCUS brands and they currently have over 350 locations across the United States.

The Schlotzsky’s menu began with one simple sandwich called “The Original”.  This sandwich contained mixed meats, cheeses, black olives and was made on a toasted sourdough bun.  The menu was expanded to include Panini’s, pizzas, toasted wraps, soups, salads, and many other items when the Wooleys owned it.  Currently the menu features sandwiches, Panini’s, two sizes of pizzas, salads, soups, desserts, beverages, and many side items.  They still feature “The Original” in every location.  They are also currently remodeling all locations with what is known as the “Lotz Better Design”.

Schlotzsky’s is looking for individuals with a passion for owning a business to buy into a restaurant franchise with them.  Franchisees must have restaurant management experience as either an owner or an operator along with a net worth of at least $1.5 million with $600,000 or more being liquid. They do require a three store commitment as well.  Schlotzsky’s provides training for all new restaurant openings along with PR support and Limited Time Offer promotions as well.  They do charge an ongoing royalty of 6% and a marketing investment of 4% that is split between national and local advertising.
