Hungry Howie’s Pizza is currently the 11th largest chain of pizza restaurants in the United States with 575 locations. It was founded by James R. Hearn and was first located in Taylor, Michigan. Later a partnership was formed between James and Steven E. Jackson, who originally delivered pizzas for the restaurant. They decided to franchise the concept in 1982 and opened the first franchise in 1983. They opened 65 restaurants over the next three years and by the end of the 1980s there were 160 Hungry Howie’s Pizza restaurants. They opened the 300th location in 1995 and the 400th in 1999. They received the award for the “Chain of the Year” in 2004 and opened their 500th location in 2005. They are still privately owned and currently have locations in 22 states.
Hungry Howie’s Pizza does not offer just pizza. They also have sub sandwiches, fresh breads, salads, sides, and beverages. However, they are most well-known for their pizza and they offer a variety of crust flavors, specialty pizzas, and toppings to create your own pizza. They also offer pizzas in 5 different sizes including the Pantangle, which is square. Their pizzas a bit different than many pizza restaurants because they flavor the crusts with 8 different choices instead of just offering one crust in pan tossed or thin.
